Midtown Art in the Gardens This Weekend

Just a quick mention…Midtown is having it’s third annual Art in the Gardens this weekend.  Free cultural arts event featuring 75 regional artists from Southeast Florida.

While you are there, you can support our local businesses by visiting the shops and restaurants in Midtown.  As you know from previous postings, III Forks is one of our favorite dining places.  On the more casual side, Pizza Fusion is awesome!  Enjoy.

Restaurant Reviews for North Palm Beach

We love to eat out with friends and family.  We dine out often and have visited many restaurants in the area.  (See our previous postings.)  Although, when I was reading the Restaurant Reviews in the Palm Beach Post, I realized there are many places I haven’t tried.  So, I’m now on a mission to try some of them.

Since there are so many to choose from, I decided to share with you the highest rated reviews (restaurants listed are all rated A for Food and A for Service) in the Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens and Juno Beach areas.   (Some I have already visited and shared my thoughts in blue.)  Try them out for yourself and let me know what you think.  I’ll be sure to share my reviews in later postings.

Cinematic Couture at Palm Beach Gardens Mall

Exhibit of Costumes Used In FilmThe kids, grandma and I spent Saturday doing what every girls favorite past time…shopping for shoes! I make no apologies, it needed to be done! The kids each left victoriously with a pair of shoes in hand! Nothing is more satisfying than finding perfect pair of shoes.

We shopped at The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens. Over past few years, the mall has immensely improved with designer stores such as Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Chanel and more. The interior design has been updated to attract the sophisticated shoppers in the area.

This month The Gardens Mall has a fascinating exhibit, Cinematic Couture, of costumes used in recent films. There they have 40 costumes on display from movies such as:

Proposed School Boundary Changes Loom Over Jupiter Families

school-books-apple.jpg

Written by Susanne Quirk

Palm Beach County has experienced considerable growth in the past few years.  As a result, boundary changes occur to reduce overcrowding in the schools.  The changes have stirred a lot of emotions with Jupiter residents, causing county officials and residents to lash out at each other due to the latest pending changes that will effect students at Lighthouse Elementary and Beacon Cove Intermediate.

It is a known fact that when families are searching for a new home, one main consideration is the school their children will attend.  Parents are willing to pay more money to live in a neighborhood within an “A” rated school. zones  The calls at Cobblestone Realty start coming in a couple of months before the end of each school year and throughout the summer with parents desperately looking for a place to live in specific “A-rated” communities so their children can attend the best schools.

Those efforts are often destroyed when the school board imposes boundary changes and, understandably, some very angry parents begin to emerge.  Currently, parents in North Palm Beach Heights and the Bluffs are fighting to keep their children at Lighthouse Elementary and Beacon Cove.  The 03-X Palm Beach Gardens Area (Mirosol) changes are detailed in the studies provided on the ABC calendar.

Parents affected by the proposal are urged to attend the upcoming meetings and let your voice be heard.  Two future meetings to attend include:

Proposed boundary change for 03-X Mirosal Elementary
Monday, October 29, 2007
Independence Middle School
6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria
4001 Greenway Drive
Jupiter, Florida 33458
(561) 799-7500

Advisory Committee Meeting
November 1, 2007
6:30-9:00 p.m.
FHESC Boardroom

Check the ABC Calendar for meeting details.

Having gone though the recent changes effecting the Jupiter High School/William T. Dwyer boundaries, we strongly urge that you stay on top of the meetings, plan your strategies and contact your public officials often to voice your concerns. The Palm Beach County School Board carries the ultimate decision regrading boundary changes.

Dining Out In Palm Beach Gardens

Written by Susanne Quirk

100_2173.JPGWe went to III Forks Saturday night.  It’s the new steakhouse in the Midtown section on PGA Boulevard.  Joe knows that I am a huge steak eater.  (I grew up on steak and potatoes and as my hubby and close friends have found, I consistently order the same thing no matter where we eat – filet mignon and I’d like it Oscar’d please!)  So, he thought it would be only fitting to treat me to a steak since it was our anniversary…what a great guy.

The restaurant is tucked in with a few other businesses now open in the new Midtown district.  Valet parking is provided.  The restaurant is your typical old style steakhouse – dark mahogany paneling, low lights and the staff is dressed in black and white.

Upon entering the restaurant, you get a view of the walk-in wine cellar which is both big and impressive.  Our table was not ready so we squeezed our way through the crowd to get to the bar for a drink.  The bar area was very spacious with plenty of bar tables for casual dining.  There is also a piano for live entertainment.

On the positive side, the restaurant is beautiful and is drawing a large crowd.  The menu is not completely a la carte.  Your entree comes with a vegetable and potatoes.  Salad is extra.  Included with the entree are fresh tomatoes and spring onions and presented to you on a platter.

We tried to take into consideration that the establishment is new and the staff is still learning.  However, by the end of the evening, we could clearly see that the customer service needed some work.  The hostess  handed us the menu before we were seated.   It took some time for the waiter to greet us.  He didn’t seem to be receptive to our polite, but constructive criticism when we noted that the lobster bisque was cold and as Joe put it, “coagulated.”  There was a long wait between courses but the waiter was quick to get back to the table to see the size of the tip that Joe left.

For the price, I would expect the experience to be a little more memorable in terms of entree, dessert and service.  It wasn’t outstanding but it was good.  I wouldn’t be opposed to trying it again if friends or family were interested in eating there.

We make it a point to “rank order” the various Steak House’s in the area and I think we will “pencil in” our ranking of III Forks only because of the “newness” of the restaurant but rest assured, they did not knock off our number one spot.

I promised Joe that I would not disclose the name of our best steak house just yet.

Tell us your favorite Steak House.  We would love to try it.
